If you are looking for Loctite 272, Loctite MR 5923, or a Loctite 680 equivalent, the smartest buying move is not to hunt for the lowest price first. It is to find out what is not in the quote. Loctite 272: Buy the Temperature Rating, Not Just the Red Color

Loctite 272 is a high-strength threadlocker made for fasteners exposed to higher temperatures. It is the kind of product you need when a bolt will see heat or thermal cycling. If your fastener stays at room temperature inside a cabinet, 272 may be overkill. I have seen this both ways: people use 272 because “red is strong,” and people substitute a cheaper red threadlocker because they do not check temperature. Both can be expensive.

In my cost history, a wrong 272 substitute did not fail during the benchtop test. It failed on the equipment, after the heat was turned on. The replacement labor took an hour; waiting for the right Loctite 272 took another day. If you ask me, that total cost beats a lower quote every time.

Loctite MR 5923: Check the Fluid and Pressure Rating

Loctite MR 5923 is not a glue. It is a thread-sealing compound for industrial pipe and fitting assemblies. It is often used where a standard plumbing paste would not be good enough for the pressure, temperature, or service fluid. The problem is that a sealant can look fine until the line is pressurized.

One supplier offered us a product “similar to Loctite MR 5923” at roughly 30 percent lower cost. I asked for the technical data sheet. They sent a general description that did not list fluid compatibility. I passed on that buy. Later I saw the same product used on a low-pressure water line in another facility. It worked there. Loctite 680 Equivalent: What Does “Equivalent” Really Mean?

Loctite 680 is a retaining compound, not a threadlocker. It holds cylindrical parts such as bearings, gears, pulleys, and sleeves on shafts. When someone asks for a Loctite 680 equivalent, they usually need a product that fills a gap inside a cylindrical joint and then hardens enough to prevent movement. There is no universal Loctite 680 equivalent because the “same” product changes with gap, load, and operating temperature.

Before I accept any equivalent for Loctite 680, I ask for a side-by-side comparison of these points:

  • Maximum gap fill: the space between shaft and hub must be within the substitute's range.
  • Viscosity: the product must flow into the joint and stay there during assembly.
