Composite Propane Cylinders: Questions to Ask Gas Cylinder Suppliers Before You Buy

I manage purchasing for a 120-person logistics company. That means ordering everything from office supplies to industrial containers, including the propane cylinders our field crew uses. Are composite propane cylinders worth the higher upfront cost?

If you are comparing composite and steel, the first quote is not the last number. Composite propane cylinders usually cost more at the line-item level. How do I compare gas cylinder suppliers?

Certification matters because the cylinder is a pressure vessel. In North America, most refillable propane cylinders carry a DOT/PHMSA specification; composite cylinders often reference ISO 11119-2 or ISO 11119-3. If the supplier cannot quote these numbers, I treat it as a flag—or rather, an orange flag, not a hard stop. Then I check whether they can actually deliver when they say they will.

Why does that matter? Because a 10-day delay on 40 cylinders stops work. The lowest-quoted supplier might be the slowest supplier, and the cost of that slowdown is never on the quote.

What should a supplier be able to show me before I place an order?

A sample, a spec sheet, and proof of certification. Does that make me difficult? Maybe. But I have made the mistake of trusting a brochure.

In 2023, a potential supplier emailed a photo of a cylinder we liked. We asked for a sample before production. The sample arrived with a different valve connection than the quoted spec sheet. How do I estimate total cost of ownership for LPG cylinders?

Who owns the cylinder after I buy it?
