Total organic carbon (TOC) is critical to a drinking water plant's process because DBPs (Disinfection Byproducts) form from the reaction of TOC and a plant’s disinfection process. Balancing this DBP formation and required disinfection to kill microbes is challenging for water plants, especially since regulatory organizations around the world limit the level of the harmful DBPs. Due to these regulations it is important that a plant understand how much TOC is removed in its treatment process and how its TOC levels relate to DBP levels.
