In an effort to reduce the risk from exposure of Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs) in the public's drinking water the EPA has established the Safe Drinking Water Act which includes Stage 1 & 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule. DBPs form from the reaction of TOC and disinfectant used to remove microbial contamination in the drinking water.
